...Because all the noble musical dreams don't make a choir. People make a choir. If you have people, you sing." Robert Shaw

Ideal for school choir directors, church musicians, community chorus conductors, graduate students, and emerging choral leaders.

Meet Dr. Esther S. Yoo

For over four decades, I have worked with choirs as a pianist, conductor, educator, and mentor. I understand the excitement, uncertainty and insecurities, and responsibility that come with leading an ensemble - especially in the early years of a conducting career.

I am especially passionate about helping choir directors navigate the transition from music student to musical leader. Music schools teach music, but it doesn't teach you how to conduct real people.

My story isn't about having all the answers. I created Choral Compass because I believe young conductors deserve more than the occasional workshops or conducting textbooks, but an ongoing relationship with someone who can help them think, reflect, grow and navigate the countless decisions that shape a conductor's journey. My coaching isn't about creating conductors who lead like me. It's about helping you discover your own artistic voice with great confidence, clarity and purpose.

CHORAL COMPASS: MISSION

HELPING CHORAL CONDUCTORS SURVIVE THEIR FIRST YEARS ON THE PODIUM SO THEY CAN LEAD REHEARSALS WITH CONFIDENCE, EARN THE TRUST OF THEIR ENSEMBLES, AND PRODUCE ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES THEY ARE PROUD OF.

Many choir directors step onto the podium carrying an enormous responsibility. You're expected to inspire singers, prepare scores, plan rehearsals, choose repertoire, communicate clearly, solve problems, manage personalities, and somehow appear confident through it all. Most of us were never taught how to do all of that.

I understand because I've been there and wished someone had walked alongside me.

Choral Compass programs are specifically designed to support you on your choral journey. I will not be giving you a check list and then wish you luck. We will walk together. We will focus on honing and developing your skills, sparking your creative potential, and engaging in candid discussions about some of the stress and fears that many of us face as directors.

Are Any of These Fears Familiar?

  • Spending hours preparing but still feel unprepared.

    • Looking incompetent in front of the ensemble.

      • You don't know if you are making the right program decisions.

        • You second-guess your rehearsal plans or have ineffective rehearsals.

          • You know what you want to hear but aren't sure how to teach it.

            • You struggle to balance technique, artistry, and efficiency.

              • Feeling like an imposter.

                • Establishing authority and earning respect as a female conductor.

Every person comes to choral directing from a different path and story. Whether you are directing your first choir or stepping into a new leadership role, you don't have to figure it out alone!

Let's crush any fears and hesitation!
