"The choir is made up of people who want to do something great together"

Hello, I'm Esther,

Music has been the thread running through every chapter of my life. What began as a love for piano, eventually led me to accompanying choirs, singing in choirs, conducting ensembles and mentoring choir directors.

Along the way, I had the privilege of working with children's choirs, school and collegiate ensembles, and community choruses. My journey eventually brought me to Hawaii, where I taught in collegiate music programs, collaborated with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and guest conducted ensembles throughout the islands. Every choir, every rehearsal, and every performance taught me something - not only about music, but about people.

One lesson took me much longer to learn than I wish it had. I spent too many years believing that being a conductor meant having all the answers. But the choir is really made up of people who get together to accomplish something greater than they could alone. It is about "us" and the collective vision is excellence. Leadership is less about proving myself and more about serving the people in front of me.

That eventually became the foundation of Choral Compass. Today, after more than four decades of making music, I have the privilege of helping new or early career choir directors discover greater confidence, artistry and leadership.

If we work together, I will not be telling you what to do. I'll ask thoughtful questions. I'll listen carefully. I'll celebrate your successes. I'll challenge your thinking. We'll solve problems together.

Great conductors aren't defined only by beautiful gestures or polished performances. They're defined by the way they see and serve the people entrusted to them. My hope is to help every choir director grow not only as a musician, but also as the kind of leader singers are inspired to follow.

Twenty years ago, what was supposed to be a temporary position brought me to Hawaii. I never imagined it would become my home. Along the way I met my husband, found an extraordinary musical community, and discovered a place of inspiration. In my spare time, you'll usually find me reading, cooking, enjoying coffee on my lanai, walking the beautiful shores of Hawaii with my energetic Rottweiler, Molly, or joining my husband on medical mission trips serving communities around the world.
